Frequently Asked Questions

Who shops at Liberty Heights Fresh?
Anyone interested in great food. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a chef, a “foodie”, or a food-curious beginner — there’s always something to savor and discover.

What is “authentic” food?
“Authentic” to us means it’s full of flavor and integrity. We’re proud that the food we sell is not only delicious, but it’s also made by folks who are passionate about what they create. The food we sell is great on your palate, great for your body, and great for your soul. It’s even great for the planet! What more could you ask?

Where does Liberty Heights Fresh find its food?
We travel the world over and all through our own backyard looking for passionate people making fabulous food. We talk to farmers, growers, producers, fisherman, cheesemakers, bakers, chefs – anyone who cares enough about food to make it worth eating.

When we find a new product, we taste it. If it’s not delicious, we won’t sell it. Since great ingredients are the key to great food, we don’t sell anything with trans fats, artificial additives, or anything that’s over-processed. Our food is fresh and authentic. It’s going to make you happy when you eat it!

Does full-flavored food cost more?
Authentic food does come with some additional cost.

We support traditional producers and their efforts to create full-flavored authentic food. We’re supporters of local and family farms who believe in the notion of land stewardship and sustainability. We’re also supporters of local businesses who are committed to using authentic, locally produced ingredients.

Authentic, full-flavored food is the result of real labor, care, tradition, and passion. We’re proud to support small, organic dairies producing some of the best American Farmstead cheeses, family fruit orchards bringing unsurpassed delicacies to the table, or local bakers using hand-crafted recipes passed down through generations. When you taste the difference, you’ll see why.

Why do we care so much about the people who make the food?
The best food comes from people who care about food. It’s that simple.

The food we sell is cultivated, harvested, cooked, baked, or prepared by people who love food as much as we do. For us, food is about so much more than just consumption. It’s about forging relationships and sharing moments of pleasure at the table. For that to happen best, we rely on authentic ingredients and on people who are passionate about what they do and about the food traditions that they embrace.

When Utah’s growing season is in full swing, you’ll see the luscious bounty of Utah’s soil from our friends at Sun River Farms, Ranui Gardens, Bell Organics, and a great many others.

During the rest of the year, you’ll find cheeses of unsurpassed quality from Helen and Rick Feet of Meadow Creek Dairy in Galax, Virginia, delicious salumi from Paul Bertolli in California, and a cornucopia of treats from all of our other friends whom we’ve met in our pursuit of good taste.

Whatever you find in our store, rest assured that it was made by someone who’s passionate about food. So come and find something wonderful, try it, and savor it with those you love.

Is everything you sell organic?
We’re proud to offer the best selection of organic produce in the state, including hard-to-find seasonal items. In fact, we’ve been offering organic food, like Ranui Organic Greens, since we opened our doors in 1993!

When we can’t offer organic, we look closely at the practices of our suppliers so that you don’t have to. We support sustainable operations whenever possible and we value best practices in land stewardship.

Some of our farmers and producers are so small that they can’t afford or don’t qualify for USDA organic certification. In such cases, we make sure we know how they raise their animals, grow their food, or create their products. We want to know what we’re selling as much as you want to know what you’re eating (don’t forget – we eat it, too!). If you have a question about a specific product, ask us. We love an informed customer.

We also strive to support local producers of fresh and delicious food. How local is local? Our suppliers can leave the farm after breakfast and get to Liberty Heights Fresh before lunch. That means you can put their food on your table for dinner tonight. How’s that for fresh?

What is your most frequently asked Frequently Asked Question?
If there’s one question that we hear over and over, it’s this: What’s that unusual looking tree growing out of the cement behind your store? Believe it or not, it’s a fig tree. As we were unloading a delivery of fresh figs one day, one rolled off the box as we were taking it into the store. A seed germinated in the spring and we were off and running with the beautiful fig tree you see at the top of this page that this year reached 16 feet in height. Unfortunately, the tree is a male and the fruit it produces is not edible (in the fig world, only the female trees – or wood – will produce edible figs). Check out our volunteer tree next time you visit our store. And for a real treasure, check out our incredibly delicious figs during fresh fig season.
