SFF Bag for 4/12/12

Organic Fennel, SHINGAI, San Juan Bautista, CA

A relative of dill and parsley, fennel is crunchy with hints of sweetness. The bulb, stalks, fronds, and seeds are all edible and all feature heavily in Mediterranean cooking. Fennel is highly aromatic with distinct flavors of anise; intense while raw but subtle when cooked, it is used worldwide to create layers of flavor in cooking.

Store fennel in the refrigerator loosely wrapped in a damp towel for several days. Fennel is a good source of essential minerals vitamin C and fiber.

Organic Mixed Lettuces, COKE FARMS, San Juan Bautista, CA

This week's shipment includes a colorful variety of tender lettuces: Green Romaine, Red Romaine, Lolla Rossa, Red Oak, Green Oak, Tango and Red Perella. Lettuces are rich in essential minerals, dietary fiber, and Vitamins A and C.

Handle lettuces with care. To wash, fill a large bowl or your sink with cold water. Gently swish the lettuces to remove any dirt, then spin to dry in small batches. Refrigerate the clean leaves and store loosely in a plastic bag. For best flavor, use lettuces within 3 days.

Organic Meyer Lemons, PRIMAVERA, Vista, Ca

Meyer lemons are distinctly different than traditional Eureka or Lisbon Lemons; they feature a signature round shape, vibrant yellow peel, oily and especially fragrant skin, and lower acid, extra sweet flesh. Use in baking, in vinaigrettes and marinades, or to add a special touch to lemonade and cocktails.

Store Meyer lemons in a bag in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Organic Curly Parsley, JJM, Watsonville, CA

Curly parsley has a distinct, grassy, and unique flavor. It is best used to add texture and complexity to soups, dips and salads. Wash parsley thoroughly before use to remove any trapped grit: soak in a large bowl of cold water and rinse several times.

Wrap parsley in a damp paper towel and store for up to one week, in a bag in the refrigerator. To refresh limp parsley, snip off the ends and stand upright in a container with a little water.

Organic Red Spring Onion, PRIMAVERA, Vista, CA

Sometimes referred to as "purple scallions," red spring onions have deep red/purple bulbs with crisp green edible stalks. Milder than a white spring onion, the bulbs and stalks are delicious chopped into fresh salads, salsas, in veggie platters, and as an attractive garnish. Or grill and serve on grilled vegetables platters, or with burgers, lamb chops, or sausages.

Store in the refrigerator wrapped in a bag for up to 6 days.
