Steven met nutritionist Dr. Nanna Meyer in the early 2000s when she relocated to Utah from Switzerland to lend her expertise to the U.S. Olympic Speed Skating Team. Nanna and Steven quickly bonded over their shared philosophy of the transformative power of wholesome, good food, both for personal health and societal well-being.
Shortly thereafter, Nanna left Utah to take on a teaching position at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. It was there that she met her future husband, Dan Hobbs, a Colorado native who owned a farm in the southeastern region of the state. After some time, the couple sold this property in order to pursue a location more suited to heirloom grain cultivation. They landed just outside Cortez, Colorado, in Montezuma County, choosing the McElmo Canyon area for its ideal isolation and environment for organic seed cropping.
Dan and Nanna have always been extremely dedicated to their craft, both in providing quality foods to their adoring customers and in caring for their land. Their operation uses regenerative, rotational, biodynamic, and conservation-oriented farming methods to grow organic, open-pollinated crops, including chile peppers, varietal garlic, mixed vegetables, legumes, heritage grains, and more.
They sell some of these crops as they are (or as seeds), but also use them to create artisan foods, such as porridges, cookies, pastas, and more! These delicious pantry staples are all crafted in small batches onsite at their Cortez Seed & Bakehouse. One standout creation, the Colorado Mountain Müesli, even received a Good Food Award in 2024, showcasing the pair’s excellence in taste, sustainability, and community commitment.
The duo is deeply invested in nutritional impact. Nanna, drawing from her childhood in Switzerland where dark rye and spelt breads were everyday fare, emphasizes whole grains, long fermentation, and sourdough techniques to improve digestibility and lower gluten, all while maximizing fiber. As with every product brought to the shelves of Liberty Heights Fresh, each Pueblo Seed offering fuels your body in a way that truly makes you feel good.
Steven makes frequent trips to the 30-acre farm, most recently in early July, to connect firsthand with the farm, taste freshly made products, and appreciate the dedication behind them. In spite of his personal gluten sensitivity, he thrives on their whole grain offerings, a testimony to the quality and care baked into each item. At Liberty Heights Fresh, Pueblo Seed & Food Co. is not just a supplier— they’re an exemplar of the kind of conscientious, good food makers that we so love to partner with.
