Item Highlights

Black Sphinx Dates

We’re back this week to talk about one of our favorite produce items of the year: Black Sphinx Dates! We’re running to the end of our supply for this year, so we wanted to give you all a chance to get one last taste before the next harvest comes next winter. Want to send some to a friend out of state? We can ship them!

Sought out by many for the past century, this enigmatic little fruit has a great allure due to its rarity, mysterious origins, wonderful texture, and flavor. These dates are only grown in one area of Arizona, primarily the Arcadia neighborhood, since 1928.  Black Sphinx Dates are small mahogany brown dates that melt in your mouth like honey. They have very soft flesh and skin with an ornate creaminess, dense as ganache or nut butter. This texture does not allow them to be transported too far and they have a very short season to be picked. Due to changes in climate and height of these old palms, harvesting has become much more difficult and time-limited! We are lucky to have a relationship with one of the main growers of Black Sphinx Dates who provides us with a small crop almost every year for the last two decades. Our owner, Steven, drove down to the Arcadia neighborhood himself to hand deliver these delicious treats to our store for you to enjoy! These are truly the most delicious dates you will ever taste.

Jake’s Gouda

Jake’s Gouda is a farmstead raw cow’s milk cheese produced by an Amish couple in central New York. This gouda cheese is made in traditional Dutch fashion – wheels are rubbed with buttercream instead of wax, meaning that the cheeses can breathe as they age. Jake’s Gouda is dense and aged, with a crystalline texture and a nutty, toasted and caramelly flavor profile.

Silver Queen

Silver Queen, an aged goat cheese with vegetable ash, is a halo shaped cheese, like a donut, with a hole in the middle. Flavors of lemon, a slight acidity, chalky texture, and vegetable ash, make up this soft cheese creation. Crafted by Park City Creamery, one of our favorite local small-batch cheesemakers!

Chocolat Moderne Valentine’s Chocolates

Will you be our Valentine? Our Specialty Grocery item this week is a chocolate assortment from Chocolat Moderne. Chocolat Moderne is one of our favorite chocolate makers that we’ve been working with for many, many years. They craft traditional and innovative flavors that are a perfect balancing act of all-natural ingredients and the finest chocolate couvertures from Valrhona. This heart-shaped assortment contains chocolates filled with Bourbon Ganache, Raspberry Ganache, Sea Salt Caramel, and Passionfruit Cardamom
